Abstract

With the discovery by Edward Janner and the advancement of vaccination, several diseases have been controlled, with recent emphasis on COVID-19, which was responsible for the pandemic that occurred from 2020 to 2023 and resulted in the fastest development of vaccines of all time, breaking the previous record of five years to just one. This research aims to provide a historical overview of the active immunization process by vaccination and demonstrate the importance of COVID-19 vaccination and the types of vaccines to reduce and debunk misinformation surrounding this topic. The study was conducted through an integrative literature review. The PubMed database and academic books were used for the literature search. This review presents the discovery of the principle of immunization, the main controlled and eradicated diseases, the classes of vaccines, the development and types of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, and the observed effects of these vaccines in clinical trials. This research elucidates the progression of active immunization through vaccination, tracing its trajectory from Edward Jenner's discovery to the zenith epitomized by the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines. The study underscores the historical significance of immunization and accentuates the scientific prowess in addressing emergent challenges, such as the global pandemic. As evidenced in this inquiry, the advancement of vaccines reaffirms the pertinence of immunization in advancing public health.
